A photo of Sharrona Pearl with long brown hair smiling warmly at the camera. She is wearing black-framed glasses, a blue polka dot blouse with a white collar, and a bright yellow cardigan. The background is softly blurred with natural light.

Sharrona Pearl is the Andrews Chair of Interdisciplinary Studies in The John V. Roach Honors College at Texas Christian University. She is a historian and theorist of the body and face, which she has explored in three monographs. She is currently working on two projects: one on the failures of empathy, and one on the pathological breast. Other areas of interest include the health humanities; visual culture; critical race, gender, and disability studies; media studies, science and performance; plastic surgery; AI ethics, and the ethics of display. Her talk will discuss the history of facial recognition technology within a critical Disability Studies perspective.
